What is the difference between a braked and an unbraked trailer axle?

The unbraked axles do not have any braking effect of their own. Braking is done entirely by the towing vehicle. This is why the maximum load capacity of unbraked trailer axles is often no more than 1,050 kg. On the other hand, a braked axle is equipped with its own braking system. Most trailers make use of a drum brake. These axles can also take more weight. The braked axles have a load capacity of up to 1,800 kg.

What should I pay attention to if I want to replace the trailer axles?

Every trailer requires approval for use in Europe. The trailer is given approval if the overrun brake, drum brake and brake cable are a combination of elements. For this combination to work properly, all the parts must be of the same brand. Pay attention to this when you buy a part. Also check out our page on brake parts.
